I hope you’ll join me in LA for an educational event designed for Bitcoin rookies. I’m excited to share Bitcoin is_ with you because I believe the way that you finish that phrase, and the way you understand Bitcoin is a very consequential question for every person alive in 2019.
Bitcoin is many different things to a wide range of people. In a recent tweet, I asked my followers to complete the simple phrase and over 1,500 responses poured in ranging from witty or outrageous to helpful and profound.
For me, Bitcoin is_ FREEDOM above all else.
My journey as a professional athlete, entrepreneur, investor and non-profit leader, has taught me a lot about money and how it relates to freedom. I’ve experienced first hand the complicated layers of the most powerful systems and institutions on earth. I’ve seen how easy it can be for people to be ensnared by the status-quo structures that we inhabit and how we are often incentivized towards greed and encouraged to behave like cowards when confronted with serious issues. But why was money making us make such awful decisions?
I started noticing a change in my relationship to money, value and time in 2017 shortly after I began investing in Bitcoin. I got in at the worst possible time, made all the common rookie mistakes, and got distracted before finally jumping completely down the Nakamoto rabbit hole late last year and then doing so publicly earlier this year:
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Pay me in Bitcoin.</p>— Russell Okung 🇳🇬 (@RussellOkung) <a href="https://twitter.com/RussellOkung/status/1128149326943834113?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 14, 2019</a></blockquote><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
I’m still working on that part. But in the meantime, I feel a sense of responsibility to articulate and share the liberation I continue to experience as I grow in my understanding of what Bitcoin is_. I’ve been fortunate to have access to the greatest thinkers and leaders in this emerging industry that was first imagined by Satoshi Nakamoto a decade ago in 2009. They are not just changing the world, they are in fact helping humanity evolve on multiple fronts at a time when rapid progress is demanded of us collectively. Introducing them to as many people as possible is one of the main reasons I’m so passionate about Bitcoin and why my team and I are committed to curating an event aimed at mainstream adoption.
As society increases in complexity, we need radical solutions if we hope to reverse the negative course we find ourselves on politically, socially, environmentally, spiritually and at the root of it all - economically.
Bitcoin is that revolutionary solution_
